LJ Watch Begins

It's not often that a former two-time MVP, who is still in his or her prime, hits the free agent market, but that is exactly what the WNBA has on its hands this offseason with Lauren Jackson.

Jackson, who will turn just 28 years old on May 11, won WNBA MVP honors in 2003 and again 2007, when she was also named Defensive Player of the Year. There is no need to post her entire resume here because, quite simply, she is the best player to hit the free agent market in years.

With the ability to assign a core designation to a player, WNBA teams are able to hold onto their stars more easily than other professional leagues.

If the NBA had a similar situation, we would never hear any rumors about LeBron James leaving Cleveland to go to New York to play with the Knicks in the largest media market. The Cavaliers would just slap the core tag on James and he would be locked into Cleveland no matter what.

As part of the latest collective bargaining agreement, the number of players that a team could assign a core designation was reduced from two to one beginning this year. The Storm chose to assign its core designation to Sue Bird, which left Jackson as an unrestricted free agent.

Jackson has taken her time in making her decision on where she will play this season. On March 26, during a radio interview that aired in her native Australia, Jackson confirmed that she intended to play in the WNBA this season and that she had narrowed her choice to either staying in Seattle or signing with Phoenix.

Jackson, who been played with Moscow's Spartak Vidnoe during the WNBA offseason, said she would not make her final decision until after the Russian season was complete and she was able to return to Australia to weigh her options with her family.

Well that time is finally upon us. Jackson’s Spartak squad advanced to the championship series of the Russian Superleague once again this season, but the defending champions were defeated by UMMC Ekaterinburg in a decisive Game Three on Tuesday, April 28.

With training camps opening on May 17, Jackson needs to make a decision in the next few weeks so either Seattle or Phoenix can round out its training camp roster and deal with the salary cap implications of adding a max-salary player.

Obviously, Seattle and Phoenix are waiting anxiously to hear Jackson’s decision. Both coaches – Brian Agler from the Storm and Corey Gaines from the Mercury – made trips to Russia this winter in order to woo Jackson. And I’d bet there was a little bit of recruiting going on among the Spartak team itself as Sue Bird of Seattle and Diana Taurasi of Phoenix are Jackson’s teammates on the squad.

The teams have waited (I would say patiently, but I doubt that is the case) for Jackson to make up her mind. She is now officially on the clock to make a decision and we’ll keep checking each day to see where she is headed.

LJ Watch - Part 2

As Lauren Jackson continues to contemplate her WNBA future, we return with a new edition of the LJ Watch. In case you missed the first entry, here it is.

Today, it's time to play the "what if" game, and look at what could happen if Jackson decided to go to Phoenix or stay in Seattle. As always, please feel free to let your opinion be heard in the comments section.

What if Lauren Jackson signs with Phoenix …

Remember what Phoenix did the last time they had an elite Australian post player? That’s right; they won the 2007 WNBA with Penny Taylor as the perfect compliment to Taurasi and Pondexter in the Mercury’s big three.

Remember what Phoenix did last year when Taylor decided not to play in the WNBA in order to concentrate on training for the 2008 Olympic Games? That’s right; they missed the playoffs.

We still do not know if Taylor will play in the WNBA this season; she just completed her play in Russia and said earlier this year that she will need ankle reconstruction surgery following that season. Until that procedure is done and we know the recovery timeline, Taylor will remain a question mark.

What is not in question is that Jackson would be able to fill the void left by Taylor and elevate the Mercury back to elite status in the Western Conference alongside the likes of Los Angeles and San Antonio.

With her ability to run the floor and shoot from anywhere on the floor, Jackson is the ideal post player for Phoenix’s up-tempo style of offense. In addition to being able to produce on the fast break, Jackson would be able set up in the post if the Mercury is forced to run a play in a half-court set.

Back in ’07, Taylor was the one that Phoenix went to the when the run-and-gun was not clicking. If Taurasi and Pondexter are not shooting well on a given night, Jackson could provide another facet to the Mercury attack that they did not have a year ago.

If Jackson heads to the desert, the Mercury instantly jumps from playoff contender to Finals contender. Meanwhile, the Storm would not only lose one of the faces of its franchise, it would have a huge hole to fill in the post, especially since they also lost Yolanda Griffith in free agency.

Janell Burse returns to Seattle this season after missing all of 2008 while resting injuries, and Camille Little filled in admirably when Jackson went down with an injury late last year. But is she ready to take on that role full time? And how healthy is Burse? Can Ashley Robinson, Kasha Terry and rookie Ashley Walker step up and contribute right away? Those are all questions that Brian Agler and the Storm do not want to have to answer.

The Storm made some bold moves prior to last season, adding a trio of veterans in Swin Cash, Sheryl Swoopes and Yolanda Griffith to its roster and adopted the tagline The Perfect Storm, with the thought that putting this trio alongside Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson would wreck havoc on the league and lead the Storm back to the Finals.

However, rather than being the force that washed away the competition, Seattle ended up in the boat with George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg that ended up getting washed away. After tying for the second-best record in the WNBA, Seattle was eliminated in the first round of the WNBA playoffs by the Los Angeles Sparks in three games.

The Storm’s downfall came by way of injuries, as Swoopes, Cash and Jackson all missed multiple games during the season and Jackson, in particular, who missed the playoffs after having ankle surgery following the Olympics.

Seattle has already parted ways with Swoopes and saw Griffith leave for Indiana as a free agent. With Jackson’s status in doubt, the only two members of last year’s starting lineup guaranteed to return are Bird and Cash, who is currently recovering from back surgery.

By addressing her back issues, Cash should return to Seattle fully healthy for the first time in three seasons and Bird, coming off of one of the best seasons of her career, is still in her prime. If Jackson chooses to return to the Pacific Northwest, the Storm will have a powerful big three of its own, with elite players at the point, the wing and in the post.

Bird and Jackson have always complimented each other well as they led the Storm to its only championship in 2004. Cash, who won titles in Detroit in 2003 and 2006, now has a year under her belt in playing with Jackson and being reunited with her former UConn teammate Bird. The trio would also be entering their second season under head coach Brian Agler. Remember, last year the Storm not only brought in a slew of new players, they also replaced their coaching staff.

Seattle has to hope that a sense of the familiar resonates with Jackson and that it helps lure her back to the Storm, the only team that she has played for in her eight-year career. A year ago, after winning her second MVP trophy, Jackson said she would not return to the WNBA if the Storm left Seattle and moved to Oklahoma City along with the Sonics. Playing for another WNBA team was not an option for her at that point. Will that same sense of loyalty pull her back to Seattle this season?

If it does, what happens with Phoenix? They will still have Taurasi and Pondexter, the two highest scorers in the WNBA a year ago. Tangela Smith – who was another key player in the Mercury’s championship run in 2007 – is coming back after missing the final nine games of 2008 after having arthroscopic knee surgery. While they lose Kelly Miller, they bring in the speedy Temeka Johnson from the Sparks to run the point and also added some frontline depth with Nicole Ohlde and Alison Bales in addition to drafting G/F DeWanna Bonner with the No. 5 pick in the draft.

While Jackson would instantly elevate the Mercury to elite status, they still have the talent to be a playoff team and could make a run if their offense is clicking on all cylinders.

Even over the phone from nearly 8,000 miles away, the emotion in Lauren Jackson's voice was palpable as she described her decision to re-sign with the Seattle Storm on Monday. Having spent the last several months considering her options before reaching a final verdict after sitting down with her family back at home in Albury, Australia, Jackson came to realize that she simply could not leave Seattle.
"I love the Storm - I love playing there," Jackson said late Monday night in her only interview between signing her new contract and leaving for a vacation with her parents. "For different reasons, the opportunity came up to play somewhere else. It came down basically to me loving it in Seattle. I've said for a long time it's my home there in America. I couldn't bear to leave. I just wanted to come home and make the decision and be with my parents and my friends here and do it that way. It was easier for me."

Jackson also referred to potentially leaving the Storm as probably "The biggest mistake that I'd ever made," and reiterated what a special place Seattle has become for her.

"I'm really fortunate and I'm glad that I had this time to think about it and really put what I love about Seattle in perspective and how I would feel if I left," she said. "I think that I would have lost a huge part of me if I had gone from Seattle, so I'm just glad that I got this opportunity to have this time and realize how important it is."

Timing played a factor in Jackson's thought process. Entering the Storm's 10th Anniversary season, she thought back on the start of her own career, and her development as a player and a person that has in many ways been intertwined with the Storm's growth as a franchise.

"There's definitely a lot of nostalgia when I think about it, like when I first came over to Seattle and I was so scared and I just didn't know what to expect being away from home," Jackson recalled. "Looking back on it, I don't know how I've lasted this long overseas, but I guess that's just a part of growing up and loving what you do. Seattle definitely has been my home, and the 10th season coming up obviously was something that made me want to be there even more, because I feel like I've been part of that program and helped it grow for a long time."

If Jackson ever wavered in that thought, the Storm was there with timely reminders. "They pulled all the right strings," Jackson said in describing the Storm's recruiting efforts, from a video that was shot at the Kangaroo and Kiwi Aussie pub that helps her feel at home in Seattle to a video retrospective of her Storm career and culminating in the e-mails from Storm Season Ticket Holders that Head Coach Brian Agler brought with him when he visited with Jackson in Spain during the Euroleague Final Four.

"I was reading them the night before we played our final game in the Final Four," she said. "I was showing Diana (Taurasi) and Sue (Bird). It made me upset because I really care about being there so much and I never thought that people felt that way back.

"Getting those e-mails, I really had no idea how passionate people were about the Storm and me coming back. When I saw that, I think that was pretty much the clincher right there. It's hard to make a decision like that based on personal feelings, but when you've got the fans out there and people that really want you back and you can put things into perspective, it definitely changes things for you."

Specifically, Jackson was struck by the loyalty of Storm fans, and those who wrote that no matter her ultimate decision, they wanted her to be happy. She was also touched by the understanding shown by the Storm organization.

"Everyone's just been so supportive, which I couldn't believe really initially," said Jackson. "Just to be a part of that, it is like a family, you know? I think that's probably what made the most difference to me is all the support and understanding I had from everybody. It was great."

Jackson's relationship with Agler was also a factor. He made staying in contact with Jackson throughout the offseason a priority, visiting her in Europe on three different occasions. Agler had already won Jackson's loyalty with his support when she had to undergo ankle surgery following the Olympics. Agler stood up for his star in the face of misguided criticism that Jackson should have played through the debilitating injury.

"He was great," she said. "I had a huge amount of trust and respect for him then. I don't think a lot of people understood what was happening, but he was so supportive. I think since then I've been pretty much on his side. Then, of course he's a great coach and everything like that. He's definitely someone I would like to play under for a long time."

Her decision made and official, Jackson's thoughts have turned to excitement about the upcoming season. She feels healthy in the wake of the surgery she underwent last August, noting that the fact that she played fewer minutes for Spartak this season has left her feeling fresh and ready to go. Now, Jackson wants to continue to develop her game, and believes the Storm is the ideal situation to do that.

"I don't feel like I've played my best basketball since before the Olympics," she explained. "I'd love to get back there and get back to my peak performance and get back to myself. I'm really looking forward to that. It's great because I've got the right people around me and people who I know can help me get better and make me get better."

Jackson watched with great interest as Agler built the Storm's roster this offseason, strengthening the frontcourt by getting Jackson's best friend Suzy Batkovic to return to the WNBA - "I'm so stoked" to play with her, said Jackson - and bringing back center Janell Burse after a one-year absence. With Shannon Johnson adding a veteran presence to the Storm's backcourt, Jackson feels strongly that good things are ahead for the team.

"I think it's going to be a great year for us," she said. "Special things can happen this year. We have all the right pieces. I think we're going to have a strong, more confident lineup in terms of how good are bigs are. Having Sue and Shannon Johnson, it's going to be amazing. I think we've got a lot to look forward to this year. I can't wait to be a part of it."

One telling answer came when Jackson was asked what she is most looking forward to from the upcoming season. "Everything, I guess," she answered.

"I'm really looking forward to it," Jackson added. "Yeah, I can't wait. It's going to be a lot of fun. It's going to be an exciting season for sure, and I'm happy that I'm going to be in Seattle. I'm really glad. "
