Sydney Flames' burning desire for Lauren Jackson
IN THE aftermath of the shocking gunning down of the boss of her Russian basketball team Lauren Jackson could be looking for a new club - and the Sydney Flames would love to have her.
Although Jackson, captain of the world champion Australian Opals, is still contracted to Spartak Moscow Region, the assassination of club owner Shabtai von Kalmanovic may mean the end of the team with which Jackson has won the last three European Championships.
Jackson has earned close to $1million in each of those three seasons playing for Kalmanovic.
No team in the Australian WNBL could go anywhere near matching the Moscow salary and perhaps not the estimated $450,000 top players earn at other European clubs.
But those closest to Jackson, including her family, would love to see more of her in Australia and yesterday the Flames head coach and her former Opals teammate Karen Dalton appealed for a white knight to come forward to bring Lauren home.

"I know Lauren has always wanted to play here, but it's always been a financial decision,'' Dalton told The Daily Telegraph.
"I'm sure she'll come back some day when she's made her money and set herself up for life.
"But if someone is out there who would enable us to recruit the world's best player and keep her in Australia, please come forward.''

Basketballer Lauren Jackson has been named the ACT's Australia Day ambassador.
Jackson recently returned to Canberra to play for the Capitals.
As Australia Day ambassador, she will make appearances at various celebrations around Canberra on January 26.
Chief Minister Jon Stanhope says Jackson will do a great job.
"I don't think it's overstating it to say that I believe Lauren Jackson is currently Australia's greatest sportsperson, male or female," he said.
"She's acknowledged as the greatest female basketballer in the world.
"I believe she's a genuine, fantastic ambassador - she's a star with star quality and she identifies so closely with Canberra."
Mr Stanhope says a wide range of events will be held around Canberra leading up to and on Australia day - including a concert on the lawns of Parliament House on Monday evening.
"Australia Day is a time for all Australians to celebrates what it means to live in this great country," Mr Stanhope said.
"Here in Canberra, Australia Day provides the opportunity for people from all walks of life to come together as a community to enjoy what is unique and special about our nation and our city."
