Re: LAUREN JACKSON!
Adoro esse artigo.......
"AUSTRALIA'S greatest female sporting export Lauren Jackson was doing the numbers yesterday as she prepared to fly to Russia on Monday for a basketball tour de force she hopes will culminate with Olympic gold in Beijing.
At 196cm (6ft 5in) and 78kg, she plans to gain another 10kg, improve her strength - raising her bench press from 30kg back up to 90kg - and, oh yes, boost her bank balance.
Improving accounts may be the easiest of those objectives.
By the time the year is over the captain of the world champion Australian Opals admits she will have made "pretty close to a million dollars in salary".
But at the moment Russia is the only place she can make that kind of money and so she is gearing up to play under contract until mid-May with Moscow Spartak, the team she won the Russian championship with last season.
Jackson, 26, also won the Korean championship earlier this year and for the second time was voted MVP in the American WNBA - the world's toughest league.
But in the WNBA the salary cap is $98,000 a year and at the moment there is no cap on the excesses in Russia, where oligarchs own sports teams and vie with each other to collect trophies - and the world's top players.
The owner of Jackson's team, Lithuanian Shabtai von Kalmanovic, is a colourful character, to say the least.
He says he made his money in construction in Africa, though rumours suggest it came from African diamonds.
He admits he was arrested for spying for the Soviet army in Israel almost 20 years ago.

"I don't know how long the money's going to last in Russia," Jackson told The Daily Telegraph yesterday after a morning gym session with former Opals star Shelley Gorman.
"This thing is a bit of a fantasy at the moment but I feel like I'm in the right time, the perfect time for me to be going over to Russia.
"The owner of our team, Shabtai, has just been amazing to me. I first went over there in 2004 and he really looked after me and mum (Maree Jackson). He flew us first class all over the world. It was just unreal.
"I don't know where the money comes from. But they just invest so much money into the women's game, which I'm all for."
But parity with the men is still a long way off, especially in the US.
"We don't even fly business class in the WNBA," Jackson revealed. "We have to fly economy, it's in the collective bargaining agreement.
"Where the guys earn millions of dollars and get private jets we have to fly economy. And it's not like we don't ever fly. We fly every second day. It's ridiculous the amount we fly and travel generally.
"I mean, it's a very professional league and it's great and it extends you. You do things in the WNBA competition and you achieve things you don't think are humanly possible.

"It's the only professional women's sports league in America at the moment. Maybe one day when I pop one out (a baby) she'll be ready in time for when there is big money in the WNBA."
Until then though Jackson will continue to follow the bouncing ball.
"This year I played two games a week for four months in Korea, so 32 games with the finals. In Russia I played about 15 games and 34 in the WNBA and we practised every other day," she said.
And to keep from going insane, she has taken up studies in things as varied as business management and feng shui.
"When you focus on playing basketball that's great, but you still have 18 hours of the day, which makes it very difficult.
"And you can either become a television junkie or go shopping and spend all your money or you can study.
"I got my diploma in business management (through Thomson Education Direct).
"I go to training for half a day, read the other half of the day and then at night someone shows up and takes me out around Moscow, so that's all good."

Tuesday, June 20, 2006 (AEST).
After an arduous 5-game road trip, the Seattle Storm are back home to the familiarity and comfort of KeyArena. Despite getting banged up, Lauren Jackson generously shared some time with the fans to answer more of your questions. Read what she had to say on varying topics including Marilyn Manson, her Mum, and the Caps in this second edition of Q&A with LJ.
Moderator: Before we get to the fan questions, it was a gruelling road trip and you copped a number of knocks and some heavy falls. Can you provide any updates on your injuries - in particular the knee? Still sneezing?
Lauren: The road trip was rough for sure!! The knee is ok, I have an MRI scan tomorrow to see what is going on, at this stage though it isn't too serious!! My cold has finally gone, and my shins, well they are pretty much the same as always...
Tim:
Hobart Hi Lauren. I'm curious to know who you most enjoy/look forward to playing with on the Australian team? Is there any team relationship that is similar to Seattle's with yourself and Sue Bird?
Lauren: I love playing on the Australian team because we are all representing our country, that's pretty special to me!! Sue and I are great friends and have an awesome on court connection... The only other player that I played with, that even vaguely resembles Sue would be Kristen Veal.
Janice:
New York Hey Lauren,
Just wondering if u get to spend much down time in each city after each game. Other than seattle which is your favourite city to go out in and once your contract expires would you ever consider playing for the Liberty.
Lauren: I would love to play in New York!! I have spent a little time there over the last few years and I enjoy it a lot!! We don't get to stay in cities much after we play, we are pretty much on the go all the time.

Ross:
Sale, VIC, AUS Hi Lauren!! I remember the 1st time I saw you play at MSAC when you were with the AIS. You were really popular then and are even more so now (obviously :-P) - Do you get recognised on the street both here in Australia and in America?
Lauren: Yeah a fair bit!! I think the fact that I'm 6 foot 5 inches tall is the main reason I get recognised. People see me and just assume I am a basketballer because of my height. That's when people make the connection.
Mia:
Perth Hey Lauren, What is it about Marilyn Manson that you love so much? His violent lyrics, freakish personality?
Lauren: Well you know, his music was part of my life growing up. I think I listened to it and I took it for what it was... Music... As a kid I definitely felt like I was a bit of an outsider for many reasons and I used him and his music as sort of an outlet. I think I looked at him as a role model too. Each to their own I say, people's perceptions of everything are always going to be different and the way that in which you handle those perceptions is what makes you the person you are! I figure I didn't turn out too bad!! :-)
Jordin:
Seattle Everyones Mother's are important and its only obvious how important your mother is to you. So how often does she come to Seattle to visit you while you're here in Seattle? Love ya LJ. Best of luck for 2006!
Lauren: Hey mum is my best friend... Mum comes to Seattle whenever I ask her to, which is awesome. There is something so comforting in having her around... I think it is the unconditional love and support I get from her and also her cosistency, she is a beautiful person that I lean on basically for everything... She is soooooo strong!!

Hi Lauren - I'm a Storm season ticket holder and I LOVE watching you play basketball. You're so good at what you do. My question is about the Storm road trips. Do you get your own hotel room or do you have to double up? Who do you room with the most? Also, do you ever get to upgrade your plane ticket to first class so you can stretch your legs out? It's a shame the team doesn't get to use Sonics plane! Thanks for being such an inspiration!
Lauren: I room on my own, but if I do share (which is rare) Sue and I normally room together.. We never get upgrades but we do get exit rows which are the next best thing!!
EmmA:
Melbourne, Aus Lauren, if you could re-live any day in your life (and even make a different choice during it) which/what one would it be?
Lauren: Hmmmmm The WNBA championship, that really was the best day of my life. I have never felt that content ever... It was awesome.

Hey Darl...sorry about that smashing from the Comets. You will have an opportunity to follow up on your fighting words on June 25th, here in H-town. I have a special present for you when you get here, so if you see a very short woman courtside trying to get your attention, I will have a framed copy of the First Day Issue Cover for the Opals' Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Games...it even has the Opals stamp on it!!! Did you know you are on a stamp?? See, you are the MVP of the World.
By the way, good going roughing up Big Syl Fowles in the Opals Challenge. I know you want your Mum's rebounding records to stand at LSU, but you don't have to put the kid out of commission...LOL. See you later on this month, and take care of those precious shins. ON YA, Tex
Lauren: Hey mate thanks for that... Houston game was bad!!! Yeah I felt bad for Sylvia she is an awesome player, I'm sure she will be back before we know it, she is great.

Seattle First, I'd like to just let you know that to be able to watch you play with the Storm here in Seattle is a privilege that I never take for granted. You are the best! Lauren, I know that there's not much time in your very busy schedule during your summer season here in Seattle, but I was wondering if, in the 6 seasons you've been here have you ever had the opportunity to visit some of the greatest natural wonders of our area like Mt. Rainier; the Olympic National Park with the incredible wild beaches and rain forest; the San Juan Islands? I hope you've had the chance to do so!
Lauren: Hey, I spend time on the islands a lot whenever we get a day or 2 off!! I have not done much else though. Seattle is such a beautiful city I am so lucky to be here and doing what I love!
Diane:
USA there's a survey on the wnba.com about "best teammates" and most of the players mentioned you and sue as the best teammates...any comments? thx....Go Storm!!!
Lauren: Sue and I play really well together. It's kind of nice to be mentioned in that category, I know we both appreciate it.
Danielle:
Newcastle Just wondering if you ever got stuck on an island and you were only allowed to choose 5 things what would they be? And do you think that you will probably finish your career with the Caps when the time comes? Good luck in the WNBA.
Lauren: Yes Caps for sure, that's my home in Australia and I would love to finish it all off there!! I mean that's where it all started...
5 things... My ipod, a good thick book, a basketball, matches and a pillow!!!!! :-D
Shawn:
Seattle What was the last book you read and what did you think of it?

Seattle, Wa Hi LJ,
We were so glad you signed on with Seattle Storm again, and for 3 years! WOW. My question is if the Sonics and Storm get sold and move out of the Seattle area at the end of its lease in 2010 will you still play for them?
Lauren: I don't believe I would resign if that happened... I'm getting older mate!! A relocation would be very sad.

Canberra What keeps you driving after all your success and how do you get out of lows to keep going? Congrats on your 35 points. Canberra misses you.
Lauren: Thanks mate, I guess I remind myself a lot, that sooner or later things get better - You know we work really hard and that's a driver in itself, and then on top of that I have always been fiercely competitive sooooo..... Anyway I miss Canberra heaps too.
Olivia:
Adelaide What do you think about Erin Phillips in the WNBA and Jan Stirling's comments on her risking a world championships position?
Lauren: Hey, I think Erin was in a really tough situation - she had a lot of advice from a lot of people but in the end it was her decision and she had to live with it regardless of the consequences. I believe she made the right decision to come over and if she plays well enough, which she is doing, she should have no problems. She is a friend of mine and no matter her decision I would have supported her.
Leah Sullivan:
Australia What are our chances for taking out the Worlds? And will Kristi, Suzy and Penny play? GO STORM
Thanks
Lauren: I hope so!! I mean the Americans are a power house but we have so much talent too... I want to win sooo badly. I believe those guys will be playing, the team has not been announced yet but I know they have made themselves available.

Dave:
Wollongong Hey Lauren, How do you think the Capitals will go with the new signings of Jessica Bibby and Caitlin Cunningham? Have they got any new signings yet? Do you think they will be a competitive outfit against other teams? Hope you win MVP.
Lauren: Hey, Thanks mate!! I do think they will be very competitive. You know Carrie is a wonderful coach with so much passion for the game, she still draws things out of me I thought impossible. I am going to miss her a lot as coach I would go as far as saying she's one of the best coaches I have ever had.
=Papillion=:
canberra Dear Lauren,
Ok well here's the thing... I quit the game 2 years ago because I got ripped to shreds (not literally) after a game by the coaches and my parents after I'd lost the final for the team... ever since then I've just felt so down, every time I saw a ball I'd just feel like playing forever and ever... I miss playing so much. I tried to restart for a new club but I don't know what it is whenever I get on the court with the ball in my hands ready to take the shot, I just automatically see the moment I was in when I missed that exact same shot... lost the game, then I just remember all the things that were said and I can't stand it... I have to leave. I have the best coach who's trying to help me get through it... I've seen psychiatrists but none of them are helping me because they don't understand what I see when I get on the court, how I love the game but then hate it at the same time... I want it back so badly, the feeling I once got when I had the ball in my hands and was able to just let everything go. Once, the court was my freedom, somewhere I went and my problems just all disappeared... but now, I get on the court, and these feeling of emptiness just swamp me and I can't shake it... I want that old feeling back, I want that freedom. Have you got any advice for me?
=Papillion=
Lauren: Hey, WOW!! I'm sorry that has happened to you. Mate I can not tell you how many times in my senior years I have missed a shot or a blockout or something to lose a game!! It happens all the time and you learn from it and you move on. When I was a kid, I guess it was under 14's and I let my team mates down, my parents were sooooo ashamed. They got stuck into me and I felt like a total failure. I have never forgotten that day, the way I felt, the way my parents spoke to me, my head space - but I did learn so much from that moment, I promised myself I would never feel that again... I have let people down since then, I have lost games by missing shots and everything else and I will in the future no doubt, everyone makes mistakes, but I play this game because I love it, I do it to please myself and only myself and when the day comes that I don't love it anymore I will walk away. You need to play with no fear of anything, these moments make you stronger on and off the court.. And basketball is a love, you do it 'cause you love it. remember that!!! Forget everyone that tells you otherwise.

Sydney Hey Lauren,
Big congratulations on making the All-Decade team. What an honour. I know you and the Storm have been travelling a fair bit with your away games, but are you cheering on the Aussies at the World Cup? Good luck with the rest of the season, and keep looking after those legs.
Lauren: Yessssssss, I went to school with 2 of those guys, Marco and Vince so I am def. cheering them on!! I went to the Kangaroo and Kiwi bar to watch the game in Seattle, there were a couple hundred Aussies in the pub at 9am on Sunday morning!!! IT WAS AWESOME... Sad they lost though!!
Moderator: Many thanks from all the fans for taking the time to hear us out during your busy schedule. Good luck with the MRI and all the best for the rest of the season!

Lauren: Hey sweety!!! I know you're awesome, thanks for your support!! My shins are just a part of my life. I have had the pain in them for a long time so I just deal with them and manage them the best I can. See you at the next game... :-)

AUSTRALIA Hey LJ do u think u will ever bring out your own brand label with your shoes, and clothes and that like the NBA stars? Because that would be wicked and I would own all of it. GO STORM!!
Lauren: Thanks mate I would love to but Nike have me all tied up at the moment!! Which I am happy with... But keep an eye out for other products that will be released in the near future!!!
I am going to miss her a lot as coach I would go as far as saying she's one of the best coaches I have ever had.

canberra Dear Lauren,
Ok well here's the thing...

Lauren: Hey, WOW!! I'm sorry that has happened to you. Mate I can not tell you how many times in my senior years I have missed a shot or a blockout or something to lose a game!! It happens all the time and you learn from it and you move on. When I was a kid, I guess it was under 14's and I let my team mates down, my parents were sooooo ashamed.
